The people of Gaza need your support now because their already extreme hardship has been worsened by some of the most severe weather in decades. The snow-shrouded Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem has given us some beautiful photos at the moment but represents bitter cold and very harsh conditions for so many across the Middle East.
We are asking that, at this time of year when we are preparing to celebrate, each of us considers making a donation to alleviate the difficulties faced by people in Gaza, who are now in their seventh year of blockade by Israel. The severe weather and the blockade together make their situation extremely dire.
Although Gaza has been spared the worst of the snow, Israel’s blockade means there is insufficient fuel to pump water and alleviate flooding; and huge blackouts as electricity for is only being generated for a few hours each day. Some 40,000 Gazans have already had to be evacuated because of the extensive flooding and a state of emergency has been declared by the Gaza Municipality. The situation is critical in North Gaza and in Khan Younis, in the south where it’s feared that up to 20,000 people may be forced to evacuate.
Since CJPP is an advocacy organisation, not a charity, we cannot accept your donation. Instead, we recommend you donate to UNRWA, APHEDA or the Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA), which do work in Gaza.
UNRWA is the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. It was established in 1949 to carry out direct relief and works programmes for Palestine refugees. In the absence of a solution to the Palestine refugee problem, the General Assembly has repeatedly renewed UNRWA’s mandate, most recently extending it until 30 June 2014.. MECA – Middle East Children’s Alliance runs programmes that provide drinking water (Maia) and psychological support for children who are most at risk from the relentless deprivation caused by the blockade (Let the Children Play and Heal). CJPP’s 2013 Nakba commemoration guest was Dr Mona El-Farra, Director of Gaza Projects for MECA. Donating to MECA will cement the link between our community and Palestinians in Gaza and demonstrate our continued support. MECA’s donations page is here
APHEDA – Union Aid Abroad is the aid agency of the Australian trade union movement. Click here to go direct to their donations page, where a pulldown menu allows you to direct your donation to their Gaza Emergency Appeal. Click here for more information about their work in Gaza.
