Arms Embargo Campaign

Campaign for an Australian Arms Embargo on Israel

The Coalition for Justice and Peace in Palestine endorses the July 2011 call from the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC) for “international action towards a mandatory comprehensive military embargo against Israel similar to that imposed against apartheid South Africa [UNSC Resolution 418 (1977)].” Israel has a documented track record of breaching international humanitarian and human rights law during its armed conflicts, resulting in repeated war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The arms embargo calls on governments, multilateral bodies, the UN, private and public companies and institutions, to:

  1.  Cease the provision to Israel of arms & related materiel of all types;
  2. Stop all military & dual-use imports from Israel;
  3. Stop the transfer of military products to/from Israel through national ports, territory and airspace;
  4. Stop cooperation with the Israeli army, military companies & military-related R&D projects, including joint ventures;
  5. Halt all military-related training & consultancies involving the Israeli army, military companies & academic research institutions;
  6. End all military aid to Israel;
  7. Refrain from any cooperation with Israel in the manufacture & development of nuclear weapons & mobilize for a nuclear-free Middle East.

Within this campaign, we emphasise and reinforce the core demands of the Palestinian BDS movement:

The Palestinian Call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) urges various forms of boycott against Israel until it meets its obligations under international law by:

  1. Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands occupied in June 1967 and dismantling the Wall;
  2. Recognizing the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality; and
  3. Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN Resolution 194.

Occupied Palestine, 9 July 2011 – Impose an immediate, comprehensive military embargo on Israel! A call for urgent international action. While the Arab Spring for freedom, democracy and social justice has exposed and challenged the collusion of world governments with autocratic and oppressive Arab regimes, many states and corporations continue their business-as-usual arms trade and military cooperation with Israel. Cooperation with Israel is maintained despite its systematic resort to massive violence against and killing of Palestinian and other Arab civilians, including school children and peaceful activists, and in spite of its increasingly brutal colonial policies against the Palestinian people and the persistent flouting of international law. Seven years after the International Court of Justice advisory opinion recommending international cooperation to ensure that Israel dismantles its illegal Wall in the occupied West Bank, and on the sixth anniversary of Palestinian civil society’s call for a broad campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it complies with international law, the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC) calls for immediate international action towards a mandatory comprehensive military embargo against Israel similar to that imposed against apartheid South Africa in the past.

WORKING PAPER: “Palestinian Civil Society Call for a Comprehensive Military Embargo of Israel”

Palestinian Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions National Committee (BNC), July 2011 – This background document accompanies the BNC’s call for an immediate, comprehensive military embargo on Israel, issued on 9 July 2011. It examines the legal framework in which the call is made, Israel’s record of unlawful use of armed force, and the role of military cooperation with Israel , Israel’s military industry and the academy in maintaining Israel’s violations of international law and its system of apartheid, colonisation and occupation against the Palestinian people. The document concludes with an overview of international legal obligations to end Israel’s unlawful use of armed force whose respect by governments, the UN and business corporations has yet to be ensured.
