19 February: Film screening Visit Palestine: A joint event with CJPP and the Leichhardt Peace Group. Introduced by Senator Kerry Nettle, who also showed slides of her recent visit to Palestine.
4 March: CJPP Annual General Meeting: This year’s AGM featured a talk by Peter Manning and a presentation on lobbying by Michael Shaik from Australians For Palestine.
18 March: Vale Professor Tanya Reinhart: Tanya Reinhart, a powerful Israeli voice, has been lost. She died suddenly of a stroke in New York on Saturday, March 17. Professor Reinhart was a dedicated political and human rights activist and fiercely opposed to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. She was also a proponent of an academic boycott of Israeli universities to protest the occupation. We were lucky to have the opportunity to hear her speak in Sydney in 2006. CJPP joins activists around the world in mourning her death and we extend our sympathy to her friends and family.
29 March: Premiere film screening The Iron Wall: CJPP commemorated Palestine Land Day (March 30) with the Sydney premiere of the documentary film by Mohammed Alatar, “The Iron Wall”. The film was preceded by a talk by the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Commission of Jurists, John Dowd QC.
12 April: Public Planning Meeting: CJPP organised a public meeting to plan Sydney’s contribution to the international day of action in June 2007 commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Occupation.
6 June: Palestine – 40 years of Occupation: CJPP, together with the General Union of Palestinian Workers (GUPW), hosted a meeting at the NSW Parliament and a rally at the Sydney Town Hall to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Occupation. Mr Paul Lynch MP welcomed guests to the Parliament House. Peter Manning, CJPP Convenor, then chaired a panel of speakers, which included Ms Randa Abdel-Fattah (author & lawyer), Ms Pinad el-Ahmad (Palestinian-Australian teacher), Professor John Macdonald (UWS), and Bishop Pat Power (Auxillary Bishop of Canberra & Goulburn).
9 June: International Day of Action – “The World Says No to Israeli Occupation”: A demonstration at Sydney Town Hall to mark the 40-year anniversary of the June 1967 War, in which the Israeli army took military control of the Gaza Strip and West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
8 July: CJPP visits the Art Gallery – The Arts of Islam Exhibition: CJPP organised an informal outing for members and supporters to the NSW Art Gallery to see the visiting exhibition “The Arts of Islam – Treasures from the Nasser D. Khalili Collection”.
25 August: Welcome Dinner for the Mayor of Bethlehem: CJPP members and guests attended the Welcome Dinner for the Mayor of Bethlehem and his delegation, which was organised by The Australia-Palestine Twin City Committee and the Marrickville Friends of Bethlehem. Guests of honour at the reception were the Mayor of Bethlehem, Dr Victor Batarseh, his wife Mrs Marcelle Batarseh, Father Amjad Sabbara from the Church of the Nativity and Mr Anton Salman, respected Christian lawyer and Bethlehem Councillor.
15 October: International guest Dr Ghada Karmi: Dr Ghada Karmi is a Palestinian-British author, academic and well-known international commentator on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. CJPP hosted Dr Karmi during the Sydney leg of her Australian tour. A dinner was attended by at least 50 people and all copies of Dr Karmi’s latest book, Married to Another Man: Israel’s Dilemma in Palestine, sold out.
30 November: Public Meeting & Film Screening: CJPP marked the annual UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (29 November) with a talk by the Head of the Palestine Delegation to Australia, New Zealand & the Pacific, Dr Izzat Abdul-Hadi and a film titled Yoom ilak, Yoom aleik: Palestinian refugees from Jerusalem, 1948: Heritage, Eviction & Hope.
12 December: Summer Dinner: A social dinner for CJPP members and supporters, with fundraising going towards the Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA Gaza Emergency Appeal, as well as the ongoing work of CJPP.
